Second Grade Semi-Independent Reading List

I received an email from a reader asking for the independent books Chipette read for second grade. I had never made an “official” list of what she read for school, but by looking through some of my old planners and relying on memory this is what I have.

The Boxcar Children by Gertrude Chandler Warner

Stone Fox by John Reynolds Gardiner (sad ending so you might want to pre-read if you have sensitive children)

Pioneer Cat by William H. Hooks

Hannah by Gloria Whelan

The Littles by John Peterson

Encyclopedia Brown, Boy Detective by Donald Sobol

Sarah, Plain, and Tall by Patricia MacLachlan (If you child really enjoys this book, the rest of the series, Skylark and Caleb’s Story, is great for this age as well.)

The Hundred Dresses by Eleanor Estes

Emily’s Runaway Imagination by Beverly Cleary

McBroom’s Wonderful One-Acre Farm by Sid Fleischman

In Grandma’s Attic by Arieta Richardson

Socks by Beverly Cleary

I call it a "semi-independent" list because at this age I still had her read these out loud to me during our school time to make sure that she was pronouncing things correctly starting with third grade I let her go off on her own to read her assigned reading list books.

You can find my other independent reading lists under the reading list tab at the top, just scroll down to the bottom.

Hopefully this list is helpful to some of you!
